Violipiano Music proudly presents a new international collaboration with Darkroom Contemporary, an extraordinary contemporary dance company based in Cape Town. Italian musician Luca Ciarla and South African choreographer Louise Coetzer conceived and created Des/Aria, a fascinating contemporary dance video shot by Oscar O’Ryan in South Africa, starring dancer Tania Mteto. The musical composition, titled with the same name, will be distributed by The Orchard/Sony Music and available on all digital stores from June 18.

The conception and the recording of the piece had an unusual gestation that virtually reached Australia as well. Last year Luca Ciarla was invited again by the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, this time for an online concert, being traveling not possible at that time. With the support of the Italian Cultural Institute of Melbourne, Luca presented his solOrkestra, an original solo project in which the violin alchemist creates music with a loop pedal, his voice, a grand piano and a skilful use of electronics. Des/Aria was one of the pieces in the lineup, the result of a total improvisation, an impromptu creation from the first to the last note, even in the musical form. “I was captured by a simple ostinato performed on the piano and then I just followed my instinct.” Luca Ciarla adds: “I immediately imagined a future for that piece, an evolution in motion and I thought I’d ask Louise to listen to it. She liked it a lot and so Des/Aria was born! ”. In 2018, both artists performed in Johannesburg at The Center for the Less Good Idea, an extraordinary creative space founded by worldwide visual art icon William Kentridge.
